A typical route for a Lao document used abroad

  1. 1

    Original document

Issued and signed by the Lao authority, school or court.

  2. 2

    Certified translation

Translated into the language the destination requires.

  3. 3

    Notarization

Certified true copy or notarized translation, when required.

  4. 4

    Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Authentication of the seal and signature in Vientiane.

  5. 5

    Embassy legalization

Final legalization by the destination country's embassy.

The exact order depends on the destination country and the document. We confirm the route before starting.

Languages we translate and interpret

Lao and English are our core pair. We also work between Lao and the languages most used by Laos's neighbours, investors and diaspora — and between any two of them.

Documents we often translate

  • Birth and marriage certificates
  • Family book (household registration)
  • Police clearance certificates
  • Diplomas and transcripts
  • Passports and ID cards
  • Court judgments and divorce decrees
  • Company registration and enterprise certificates
  • Contracts and powers of attorney
  • Medical records
  • Bank statements and tax documents

Serving every province of Laos

Our office is in Vientiane. Clients in the provinces send scans by email and originals by courier; we return finished documents the same way.

Documents going to, or coming from, abroad

Laos is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so most documents moving between Laos and another country need consular legalization. We know each route.

Frequent questions

How much does a certified translation cost?

It depends on the document type, length, language pair, deadline and whether notarization or legalization is needed. Send us a scan and we will reply with a fixed quote, usually within one business day.

Do you have an office in Laos?

Yes. Our Lao branch is in Vientiane, and we serve every province by email and courier. We are part of ABC Translation's international network, which handles the steps that must happen abroad.

Does Laos accept apostilles?

No. Laos is not a party to the Hague Apostille Convention. Foreign documents for use in Laos need legalization by the Lao embassy or consulate, and Lao documents for use abroad are authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and legalized by the destination country's embassy.

How long does legalization take?

Translation alone is often ready in a few business days. Legalization depends on the ministry and the embassy involved. We give you a realistic estimate with your quote.
